7 Easy Stretches You Can Do at Your Desk

Sitting for hours can make your back, neck, and shoulders feel stiff. But you don't need a gym to fix it. Here are 7 easy stretches you can do right at your desk, without even standing up. Each one takes less than a minute.

Why sitting all day makes you stiff

When you sit for a long time, your body stays in one place. Your back gets tight. Your shoulders bend forward. And your neck starts to hurt from looking down at your screen. The fix is simple: move a little, often. You don't have to do a lot. Just don't stay still for hours.

7 easy desk stretches

1. Stretch your back. Put your hands on your knees. Slowly round your back, then arch it. Do this 5 times.

2. Twist in your chair. Hold the back of your chair. Slowly turn to one side. Then turn to the other side.

3. Stretch your neck. Slowly bring one ear down toward your shoulder. Hold for a few seconds. Then do the other side.

4. Squeeze your shoulders. Pull your shoulders back and down. Hold, then let go slowly.

5. Rest your ankle on your knee. Put one ankle on top of your other knee. Lean forward a little. You'll feel it in your hip. Then switch legs.

6. Stretch your wrists. Hold one arm out straight. Gently pull your fingers back with your other hand. Do both hands.

7. Open your chest. Hold your hands together behind your chair. Lift them a little and push your chest forward.

A quick 5-minute routine

Short on time? Do them all together:

• 1 minute: back and twist

• 1 minute: neck and shoulders

• 1 minute: hips (ankle on knee)

• 1 minute: wrists and chest

• 1 minute: stand up and walk to get some water

Do this once in the morning and once after lunch. You'll feel much better by evening.

Wear clothes you can move in

Many people skip stretching because their office clothes are too tight. This is where Zoiro helps. Our Active Anywyr polos and pants stretch and move with you. So you can do all these stretches and still look smart for your next meeting.

Common questions

Do desk stretches really help?

Yes. They won't replace real exercise, but they help your body feel less stiff and more relaxed during the day.

How often should I stretch at my desk?

Try every 1 to 1.5 hours. Even one or two stretches each time is enough.

Which stretch is best for back pain?

The chair twist and the ankle-on-knee stretch are best for your lower back and hips.

Can I stretch in my office clothes?

Yes, if they are soft and stretchy. Tight clothes make it hard to move.

Quick tips

• Move every 1 to 1.5 hours.
